Example
Suppose you want to buy/sell the stock (steel or any other material pipes/bar, film rolls, paper sheets etc.)
Stock is available in units of fixed lengths say 100 feet. The requirement is as follows:
length 97 feet -- 45 pieces
length 61 feet -- 36 pieces
length 49 feet -- 31 pieces
length 21 feet -- 14 pieces
length 75 feet -- 35 pieces
length 12 feet -- 24 pieces
length 10 feet -- 55 pieces
Definitely you will have to cut the fixed length stock to fulfill the requirement. For example
Option 1: Cut 75 feet 1 piece, 10 feet 2 pieces
Option 2: Cut 75 feet 1 piece, 12 feet 2 pieces
Wastage in option 1: 5 feet
Wastage in option 2: 1 feet
So how to cut the stock so that wastage is minimized. In other words how many minimum pipes/stock units are needed just to fulfill the need?
